As a professor of medicine and biochemistry in the UK and USA, I studied lipid and lipoprotein metabolism and their relationships to cardiovascular disease. During this time, I discovered the link between ‘good’ cholesterol (HDL) and coronary artery disease, and was consultant to Uniqure BV during the development of the first approved gene therapy in the EU, alipogene tiparvovec. My interest in the role of lipid peroxidation in skin aging, skin cancers, acne, and other skin disorders was prompted by my discovery that the level of lipid peroxides in tissue fluid from skin in healthy volunteers was almost 30 times greater than expected from the level in blood.
